Branches
Several branches are now taking stock for sale at various events throughout the county and, with summer nearly upon us, the prime sales season is about to begin. There is still scope for more sales at events. The 1998 Wild about Cornwall calendar will soon be back from the printers - this is a very popular sales item, particularly with those people visiting the county. They can take a bit of Cornwall home with them, safe in theknowledge that the money they have spent goes towards protecting what is left of its wildlife. If you would like information about sales events or even about setting up a temporary shop, please do let me know. There are manyempty premises out there, and if you have the time, energy and enthusiasm, and think that you might enjoy running a shop, I am always happy to advise you on the ways to go about it.

Royal Cornwall Show, Wadebridge
5th, 6th, 7th June

Only a few weeks to go. This is perhaps our most important outdoor event for publicising the Trust as well as
bringing in valuable profits from sales and the raffle. We do of course need a lot of help setting up and
manning stalls throughout. Although we do get very busy, with enough help we can ensure that everyone gets a
good chance to look around the show. Please call me at the Penzance shop - (01736) 331824 - or at Allet if you would like to help.

Raffle
The 1996 High and Wild raffle proved to be a great success both for the Trust in raising valuable funds and for the prizewinners. Mr and Mrs Brock from Newlyn won the third prize - a return flight by Skybus from Land's End to St Mary's, Isles of Scilly, as well as a week's stay at the Wheelhouse Hotel, Porthcressa, St Mary's. They kindly wrote to tell us about their prize.
"It took a day or two to sink in," wrote Mrs Brock. They hadn't travelled by Skybus before, and thoroughly enjoyed their flight. As for the holiday, Mrs Brock went on to say: "For two old dears, both well over 70, we had wonderful walks and saw so much beauty...Mrs Rigby gave us a very friendly welcome...Mr and Mrs Rigby and their staff are kindly, caring people who made a great contribution to a very happy week...The scenery was lovely, many wild flowers were still in bloom...trees, ferns and mosses...plants that struggle to grow in our garden not so far away had seeded themselves and were growing in nooks and crannies." Despite encountering one of the first autumn gales, they were able to relax indoors "in the warm lounge of the Wheelhouse and watch the sea rage right up to the garden wall."
We are happy to announce that the generosity of those who donated prizes last year has been repeated and we can again offer holidays on the Isles of Scilly as well as many other prizes. This year's draw will take place at Allet on Friday 11th July. Good luck!

Frank Ansell
Frank died at Penzance on 6th December. He was born at Devoran and spent the greater part of his working life in Zambia as Deputy Director of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. On his retirement in 1974 he returned to Cornwall to farm in Zennor.Frank then joined the Trust and became its Administrative Officer at a crucial time in its development in the 1970s and 80s. His work during those years did much to promote our growth and esteem. Frank's acknowledged expertise as a mammalogist and his knowledge of scientific farming were invaluable then and subsequently as he remained a member of the Trust's Council and Scientific Committee until his death. Many members will also remember Frank as a personal friend. He will be missed, not only by these, but by those of us who appreciate the great contribution he made to the Trust. We extend our sincere sympathy to Mary and his sons.
Ken Williams

We were also saddened by the death in February of Monica Cartwright, a dedicated supporter of the Trust and wife of our Honorary Secretary Tony Cartwright. Our sympathies go to Tony and his family, together with thanks for the contribution he and Monica have made to our cause.
