A cause for celebration

Trevor Edwards gives us some welcome news about plans that will help the Trust to consolidate its work for wildlife.

The steady growth of the Trust has meant that we have been operating from split sites at Allet and in Truro for the past five years. Trust Council has long recognised that this • is undesirable and has considered various options to focus our core activities at a single location.

Almost a year ago the property next to Five Acres, the former Two Burrows Nursery, went on the open market and Council gave the go ahead to negotiate and arrange the finance to acquire this site. This was seen as a unique opportunity as it could meet the Trust's accommodation needs whilst at the same time provide opportunities to develop our programme of work in relation to wildlife gardening, volunteering and environmental training thanks to the extra land and accommodation. As a bonus we would also acquire five acres of the Allet Bog Site of Special Scientific Interest to complement our existing woodland at Five Acres.

As this newsletter goes to press it appears that our negotiations are coming to a successful conclusion and we are proposing an Open Day on Thursday 21st August so members can visit and hear more about our plans. This will be confirmed in the local press as the next newsletter will not be out by then. More on this exciting project in the future.

First 'Live' Trust for RSNC

The Royal Society for Nature Conservation (RSNC), the governing body of The Wildlife Trusts, is looking ahead to the future, and the Cornwall Wildlife Trust is once again taking the lead.

The Internet is becoming more and more important as a way of 'spreading the word' and gaining support, so the RSNC has taken the huge step of purchasing its very own web server.

Cornwall Wildlife Trust has had its own web site for over five years now but will be the first Wildlife Trust to be hosted by the RSNC. This should enable us to make use of the many extra facilities now available on other web sites and provide our members with a better service.

Our site is very diverse and very active, with up-to-date news releases, wildlife what's on, competitions, details of marine si'ghtings, nature reserve details, species information and much more. We aim to appeal to all wildlife enthusiasts, whatever their interest or age. It's a huge aim and a huge site!

Initially visitors should not see any major changes to the functionality of the site, but we have big plans for the future.

Our new, easier to remember, domain name is also now in place:

www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk, although if you use the old address you should be automatically redirected. Don't forget there's more than one way to surf in Cornwall!
