Editorial

The theme of our stand at this year's Royal Cornwall Show is 'Water for Life', and as we welcome the summer I make no apologies for including several articles about the maritime treasures of Cornwall, from the jewel that is St George's Island off Looe to the awe-inspiring basking sharks which congregate in our coastal waters at this time of year.

We are coming to realise the vulnerability of marine species, as reflected in the findings of volunteers such as Stella Turk, who records strandings along our coastline. Stella, along with founder member Jean Paton, is deservedly honoured with an MBE this year. Our Marine Conservation Officer gives us a disturbing report on dolphin bycatch in European trawler nets and appeals for our support for a nationwide campaign for EU regulation to stop this ongoing tragedy. Also featured is a profile of volunteer Alison Forward who works in schools to bring coastal pollution and marine issues to our children, the conservationists of the future.
