Wildlife Sites appeal

Pictured here is the marsh fritillary - one of many wetland species which benefits from the Trust's essential work to protect Wildlife Sites. The current Wildlife Sites appeal has raised over £8,000 so far. To all who have contributed, thank you once again for your amazing generosity. It's not too late for anyone to make a donation, and the importance of this appeal to conservation in Cornwall cannot be underestimated. Please call if you would like further details.

Mardi Tempest

Mrs Margaret Irene Tempest (Mardi to her friends) died unexpectedly on 3rd October 2001. A long-standing member of the Wild Flower Society, she attended many of the meetings both in Cornwall and elsewhere. Always keenly interested in both the naming and the conservation of plants, she became a member of the Penhale Conservation Committee, a group concerned with the plant and animal life of the richest complex of
sand dunes in the county. She served on one of the branch committees of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust as both Secretary and Chairman and played an important role in the recording of plants, contributing much information both for the recently published Flora of Cornwall and for the forthcoming BSBI Atlas 2000. She was involved right from the start as a volunteer in the Cornwall's Living Churchyards project and had in fact surveyed more of Cornwall's churchyards in relation to their flora than anyone else. One of her great pleasures was the search for plants still in flower for the "Last Week Hunt", her last list being submitted in 1999. It is not widely known that after her retirement from the nursing profession she became a Marie-Curie helper - a very needed assistant to the Marie-Curie nurses. She will be sadly missed by this special group and also by her botanical friends and her family, to whom we offer much sympathy.

Extra hands needed
It would still be good to see a few more people coming along to help with "hands-on" conservation work on our Sunday PARC - Practical Action on Reserves in Cornwall - tasks. Details of tasks are in the diary section, or just phone for a leaflet. If you have time to spare during the week and would like to help with ongoing work on the reserves, please just call a few days beforehand to find out what's going on; we are always grateful for practical assistance. Attending a PARC task is a great way to help out with the work of the Trust whilst also finding out more about your local nature reserve. No experience is needed, just plenty of enthusiasm, wellies (steel toecaps are best), waterproofs and a packed lunch. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the Trust if you would like further details or to be put on our mailing list for the PARC leaflet.

Mrs Audrey Lucas

We were saddened to hear of the recent death of Mrs Audrey Lucas, lately of Golant-by-Fowey, who had been a member of the Trust for many years. Mrs Lucas has left a generous bequest of £5,000 to support the Trust's conservation work, for which we are very grateful.
