Thanks to you..

People are our greatest resource. As always, we only have space here to mention a few examples of the members and staff who make the Trust work, and the varied ways in which they contribute to its success, but we thank you all.

Sales

Time to mail for sales!

August saw the launch of our first mail- order catalogue, which you will find enclosed. It's a real pleasure to be able to offer a selection of gifts and goodies to members wherever you are! I do hope you can find something you would like - for Christmas, birthdays or any occasion!

The format of the sales section of Wild Cornwall will also change slightly in future editions, in that it will be a way of updating your catalogue with new products. Do hang on to the one you have as you can order from it right through until September 2000, when we hope to produce our second edition! Ordering is very straightforward, too. You can either phone your order to us with your switch or credit card details on (01736) 331824 or send a cheque with your order to our shop address: 2 Market Place, Penzance, TR18 2JA.

Happy shopping!

Royal Cornwall - a dry and successful occasion

Thanks again to all the volunteers who helped at this year's show. Our income was up £700 on last year and the presence of artist Dick Twinney was a real crowd puller as well as a financial success. Look out for us at the show next year when a number of areas of the Trust's operation will be joining together in a larger marquee. People are recognising more and more that wildlife conservation and the future of agriculture go hand in hand.

Photography in the Wild

It is now the end of the Photography in the Wild exhibition week and having just completed two days of field workshops and packed away all the photographs I am suitably tired. This exhibition took a lot of effort to put together and stage. For me, it was worth it just to see such a fantastic array of good- quality images in one hall. We had photographs from 20

Cotton grass at Breney Common - the delightful venue for Photography in the Wild.

photographers and they were taken all over the world, showing an incredible variety of styles and wildlife. The field workshops went well, I think, although it is always difficult to judge yourself. There were 14 different people that attended and they almost all made very positive comments. The photographic results of these workshops were of a very high standard and I expect to see many of our participants at our Photographic Group events in the future. The enthusiasm shown by the participants was refreshing and rewarding.

The exhibition was not attended by as many people as we had hoped for, but I hope that those who went enjoyed themselves.

Thanks must go to Peter King for his major role in organising the event and to Sally Hawkins for her help in setting up and liaising with the Trust. I would also like to thank the members of the Photographic Group who helped with manning the event and providing prints for display; in particular I must thank Norman and Margaret Froggatt, who were most supportive throughout the week (and before!).

Once I recover I will probably want to do it again?!

Appeals update

Marine Life Appeal

Thank you for your generous response to the Trust's Marine Life Appeal. At the time of writing, the initial burst of replies has given us a total of nearly £5,000. We are very grateful to Friends Provident for sponsoring the appeal and donating to it. Without this help, much of the money raised would have been taken up by printing and postage costs.

In case you haven't decided about donating yet, and for the benefit of nonmembers who see Wild Cornwall, we are using our back page to give the appeal another push. The need to expand our marine work is very great, as the shocking examples highlighted in our appeal publicity have demonstrated, so please do all you can to bring this to people's attention.

Draw winners

The summer draw raised over £6,000 for the Trust's Habitat Appeal - thank you, once again, for your generosity. Using this as partnership funding to draw down Heritage Lottery Fund or other grants, we could convert it into another £60,000 for land purchase - watch this space.

There were over 30 prizes. The winners of the top six were: Mr and Mrs Roberts of Helston (long weekend at Lyonesse Guest House, Isles of Scilly, with helicopter flight from Penzance); Mrs C Rogers of St Ives (Dick Twinney original painting); Mr and Mrs Logue of Port Isaac (two day returns on Scillonian ferry); Mr and Mrs Dennis of Truro (limited- edition sculpture by Peter King); Mrs J McMullen of St Austell (£ 40 voucher for Rick Stein's restaurant); Mr Dodd of St Agnes (signed copy of The Butterflies and Moths of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by Frank Smith).

Staff changes

Over the last few months we have said sad goodbyes to Countryside Adviser Siôn Brackenbury, who has joined the staff of Herefordshire's Wildlife Trust, and Conservation Officer Tania Percy- Bell, who has left to spend more time

with children Pelham and Kezia. The latest patterings of tiny potential conservationists' feet have come by courtesy of Paul and Sarah McCartney (Helen) and Nicola Roberts (Merryn). Our force for wildlife has also been increased by the addition of a replacement officer for the Biodiversity Initiative (Ruth Adams) and new team members for education (Terry Geater) and the consultancy (Caroline Arkley).

New number

Apologies to anyone who has had trouble getting through to Trust HQ - with so much happening, it's not surprising that our lines are often engaged. Please try our alternative number - (01872) 240777 - and make a note of it.

The diary

A few words of thanks are well overdue for our Diary Editor Mark Dungey, who has now been quietly carrying out this crucial and time- consuming task - as a volunteer - for over five years. Few people will have had the opportunity to thank Mark in person but his contribution is much appreciated.

You can make Mark's job easier by submitting diary entries only on the proper forms - available from Trust HQ. Information provided in other ways takes up much more of his time and effort. Please remember also to send your event details by the specified copy deadlines and in accordance with the timing explained at the end of each diary.

Mark Dungey can now be contacted by fax - (01209) 860970 - as well as post (see diary).

Millennium magazine

The next issue of Wild Cornwall will be a millennium special, published in early December.

Its copy deadline will be 1st October 1999.

Please bear this in mind when submitting articles or diary entries. All items for publication should follow the issue's three- part theme: our achievements to date; where we stand now; our vision for the future. Please let me know as soon as possible if you wish to offer any information or photographs.
