Cornwall's Wildlife Oscars

The Cornwall Biodiversity Initiative (CBI) is proud to announce Cornwall's first ever Wildlife Oscars - a poll to determine the county's favourite animal and plant species. This covers all Cornwall's wildlife, so whether you want to vote for buttercups or butterflies, barn owls or basking sharks, now is your chance.

The Wildlife Oscars is being run as part of the Wealth of Wildlife (WoW!) Project/ an ambitious public awareness programme aiming to encourage wildlife recording and conservation throughout Cornwall. Nick dark, the project coordinator/ explained what the vote is trying to achieve:

'The Wildlife Oscars is a really great way to capture people's imaginations and get them thinking about the wonderful range of wildlife Cornwall has to offer. By celebrating this diversity of life it's hoped people will realise just how important it is that we work to protect it.'

You can influence the outcome of the Oscars by voting for your favourite Cornish wildlife at polling stations throughout the county. Ballot boxes can be found in all Tourist Information Centres The Eden Project and many of the glorious gardens that are open to the public. Voting slips are also published each week in the Western Morning News. You can even vote wherever you are in the world on-line at the WoW! Project website (www.cornwallwow.org.uk) and BBC Cornwall's website (www.bbc.co.uk/cornwall). Voting closes on 30th September and the winner will be ai-viounced soon after.

However things don't end there as the results of the Wildlife Oscars will help to shape a Wildlife ID Guide to Cornwall. This will highlight some of the county's

Owlfavourite animals and plants/ as well as some of its less well known species/ and will be ready for sale in spring 2004. So please take this opportunity to promote your favourite species/ and cast your vote in Cornwall's Wildlife Oscars.
