POLGOON VINEYARD
Award Winning Winery near Penzance, Cornwall
Polgoon Vineyard is an award winning winery based in Penzance, Cornwall in the South West of England. Polgoon Vineyard has succeeded due to the determination and passion of it's owners, John and Kim Coulson. They have developed the Vineyard from a derelict farm and outbuildings to a flourishing business producing award winning products.
About Polgoon
Six years ago the Coulsons were fish merchants supplying Marks & Spencers from their business based at Newlyn Fishing port. They had 5 children and needed a bigger house to accommodate the growing family! By chance they found a derelict farmhouse on the edge of Penzance and decided to purchase it - along with 23 acres, 2 cottages and 2 barns for conversion!
After meeting an award winning winemaker they decided to plant vines, and remarkably in their first wine harvest (2006) were awarded the Trophy for the “Best Still Rose in the UK”. This trophy was awarded by the UK Vitners Association, was judged by 7 Masters of Wine and sponsored by Waitrose.
After such a great start adverse weather conditions affected the harvests in 2007 and 2008 leaving no wine! Determined not to be beaten the Coulsons perfected “Aval” (Cornish for apple), a sparkling cider product made using the traditional method (the same method the French fizz makers use). This was first marketed locally and proved to be very popular. Recent additions have been Aval Raspberry and Peren (Cornish for pear) also made using the traditional method and all have won Taste of the West Awards.
Polgoon drinks and juices are now stocked in many restaurants, cafes, delis and farm shops throughout the south west and beyond.
Recent Polgoon harvests have been good and this year have produced a selection of good wine, including their award winning rose, a seyval grape white and a pinot noir red. Polgoon Elderflower Fizz and a range of small 330ml bottle ciders, Polgoon Cornish Cider, Cornish Black and Cornish Pink, complete their range of Cornish made drinks.
The challenges for Polgoon and the Coulsons are enormous but they passionately believe in the business and will continue to work hard to achieve growth and an award winning national and international vineyard.
