BRYHER
Isles of Scilly
Child of Bryher
Bryher, the smallest community of the Isles of Scilly welcomes the visitor to share its peaceful, yet spectacular island. It is an island of contrasts. In Spring there is a profusion of colour with wild flowers daffodils and narcissi in every hedgerow and field corner. In Autumn many migratory birds use Bryher as a resting place and gales frequently lash the western coast making Hell Bay an awe-inspiring sight. And, whereas the rugged west coast faces the full force of the open Atlantic, the east coast overlooks the sheltered waters of the channel between Bryher and Tresco. We are unique among the islands as we have a year round launch service so the other islands are accessible to the Bryher visitor whatever time of year he chooses to take his holiday.

Boating is an integral part of daily life. Each day our launches depart for the other islands, and there are trips every week to the lighthouses, seal and bird colonies, the gig races, and evening excursions to the pub. Launches can be privately hired for shark fishing, wreck or reef fishing and diving. Dinghy Hire and Sailing instruction is available.

Bathing from all our uncrowded beaches is safe and the clear waters of Scilly are ideal for diving and snorkelling. Rushy Bay ranks among the finest beaches of the islands.

Walking (with three quarters of the island open heathland and with very few vehicles) appeals to the rambler and beachcomber alike. The coastal paths tollow the varied shore and the hills command splendid views of all of Scilly. Food and drink can be enjoyed in comfort at the Hell Bay Hotel, which serves morning coffee, bar lunches, afternoon and cream teas. The restaurant is open to non-residents for breakfast and dinner. The Pitch and Putt Golf Course is also available to non-residents.

Fraggle Rock Cafe (licensed) and Vine Farm Cafe both provide lunches and evening meals and through the day hot and cold drinks, light snacks with home baking, cream teas and ices. Bryher Stores and Post Office, the Island's Bakery, supplies a wide range of fresh baked foods and sells general provisions and liquors. Advance orders can be delivered to your holiday address prior to your arrival. Some farms sell home-grown produce and a variety of local bulbs.

Bryher Church has regular services and details are always posted on the Church Notice Board.

Social Activities. Disco and dances are sometimes held at the Bryher Community Centre, which also provides pool, table-tennis and other recreational facilities for both residents and visitors.

Accommodation of all types is offered on Bryher. There is a choice of hotel, guest-house, self-catering cottage or chalet and campsite.

Bed and breakfast as well as half-board terms available.

Please ensure with proprietors that pets are welcome.

THE VICTORY INN is hidden from view but situated in the same attractive garden as Firmans and is a few steps nearer to the safe beach at Green Bay. There are three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with twin beds, and a child’s single bedroom. The main living and dining room has a sofa-bed for an extra sleeping space. There is a shower room and a large fitted kitchen. A small enclosed porch at the front provides somewhere to sit when the weather’s not so warm outside.

FIRMANS adjoins our own house and is a typical example of the small Scillonian granite cottage added to the main farmhouse when the son of the family married. It still retains a pleasing cottage atmosphere although now equipped with modern conveniences.

THE BOATHOUSE, which is just a few steps from the beach at Green Bay, is converted from a sail loft and offers very comfortable accommodation for two people. It is built on traditional cottage lines and adjoins our working boat shed but has its own private entrance and garden. The downstairs bedroom has a large double bed - which can be converted to two 2’ 6’’ beds - and ensuite shower room.
