The southern side of the Helford River is an unspoilt and tranquil area where you really can forget all the pressures of modern life. Hidden creeks and winding lanes full of wildflowers lead to spectacular coastal walks with views from the eastern side of The Lizard towards Falmouth Bay and beyond, from the western side towards Mounts Bay and from the south of the peninsula to the wide open sea. Inland Goonhilly Downs is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with rare plants only found on The Lizard (this area of Cornwall was once attached to Africa!).
Sailaway St Anthony provides boat hire, including dinghies, paddle boards and kayaks, on nearby Gillan Creek. Nearby attractions include The Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, Flambards in Helston and The Lizard village, the most southerly point in the UK, where you can by pieces made in local serpentine. Don’t miss a visit to Gwella Dairy near St Martin for lovely artisan ice cream or Roskilly’s near St Keverne for a choice of over 30 delicious organic ice creams, sorbets and frozen yoghurts!
The picturesque Shipwrights Arms on the waterfront in Helford (2.5 miles), the community-owned New Inn in Manaccan (1.5 miles) and the Five Pilchards in Porthallow Cove (2 miles) are nearby family-friendly pubs with food. St Keverne (3 miles) has a village shop, post office, newsagents, pub and cafes and it’s 10 miles to Helston for supermarkets.
“Gillywartha is a fantastic base for exploring The Lizard. Gillan Cove/Creek a 10 minute walk away is a hidden gem. We have had a great holiday and visited many places, Kynance, Helford Passage, Lizard Point, Poldhu, Kennack, Praa and Gwithian. The bread, Cornish butter and Cornish biscuits were warmly received on arrival. The visitor book from 1932 is a fantastic read, a piece of history. We just love Cornwall!! Thank you.” The Youngs, Gloucester
“We had a lovely time in Cornwall and the property was nice, close to nature and wildlife. Many thanks to the owners who left the treats – we enjoyed them!” Sallija G, Blackburn
