The tiny ancient harbour of Mousehole is just 2 miles west of Penzance, the Land's End Peninsular's main town. Mousehole's maze of little alleys and interlinked cottages have drawn visitors for many years but, in reality, they were so built to protect the occupants from the worst of the winter weather blowing straight in off the Atlantic. A fisherman who had spent days at sea did not wish to see the sea from his front room!

For today's visitors Mousehole is well served by a local shop and Post Office as well as souvenir shops and art galleries. There are cafes serving light lunches, Clotted Cream Teas, ice creams etc, two excellent restaurants and the local Pub - The Ship - all within an easy stroll from Oaken Mews.

Penzance has a mainline railway station as well as ferry and helicopter services to the beautiful Isles of Scilly. It is well supplied with larger shops and supermarkets and a wide range of restaurants.

Places to visit around West Penwith include beautiful Lamorna Cove (a good tramp along the coast path from Mousehole for walkers) and Porthcurno with the famous open air Minack Theatre. To the east is Marazion, famous as the jumping off point for St Michael's Mount, and to the north is the wild coast to Zennor and on to the famous artists' haven of St Ives. En route to Land's End is the old mining town of St Just (now renowned also for its art galleries), Cape Cornwall (the only cape in England), with its challenging 18-hole golf course and magnificent cliff scenery, and Sennen with its tiny harbour and famous surfing beach.
