Camborne Rugby Football Club
‘A History Etched In Granite’
Camborne Rugby Football Club was formed in 1878, only 14 years after the first recorded rugby match, (between Blackheath and Richmond) and 7 years after the formation of the Rugby Football Union. The fact that organised rugby should be taking place in such a geographically remote part of the country at such a time is perhaps surprising, the fact that rugby became the focus of Cornish pride is not.

Throughout its long history, the local mining industry has provided Camborne with a great number of its players. There is no harder form of mining than that which involves cutting through granite and such ‘hard rock’ mining produces very hard men indeed. Miners from the Camborne area found themselves in demand all around the world as a result of their expertise and it is no surprise that they seized the opportunity to preach the rugby gospel during their travels. They were to become greatly influential in introducing rugby to Australia, South Africa and North America.

Although the mining industry has dwindled over the years, rugby in Camborne has been played with a passion that remains undiminished to this day. This feeling for the game is exemplified in the Club motto ‘An Gwary Ha Tranahen’. Translated from the Cornish it means, ‘The Game and Nothing Else’. Surely there can be no finer rugby philosophy.

Camborne Colts RFC
Camborne Colts of the present, and past celebrated fifty years of rugby in 1998.
The Colts have produced many players that have progressed through the club and have really been the lifeblood of the club, providing many first team players.
This is a record that few Cornish clubs could compete with, and in time one they may well come to envy when cheque books start to dry up.
