| Thompsons the Plumbing & Heating Merchants was
founded in 1955, by Mr Eric Thompson and it all started in a small warehouse,
just outside of a Cornish Town, called Redruth. From it's early days as
a cylinder and radiator manufacturer Thompsons could claim to be the largest
plumbing and heating merchant in the South West of England with fourteen
branches employing over 200 staff.
Right from the very offset the emphasis always was that the customer comes first! Thompsons was never afraid of change. The customer was always first, and they liked to ensure that any changes made were changes beneficial to the customer. Throughout the 40 plus years they incorporated new ideas and technology to ensure that they could build upon success. For example, Thompsons made available to their customers computer data from their stock list along with a specially commissioned software package for a parts ordering and estimating service, so customers could always kept up to date with any price and discount change. With this package the customer, at any time, could price their jobs either at home or in the office without contacting Thompsons. They were an early user of the internet, and used EDI (electronic data interchange) to communicate with customers and suppliers. With such a successful history, Thompsons became respected for their expertise and experience in their own field of heating, sanitaryware and plumbing equipment. This expertise and experience was acquired by Plumbase a national chain in 2000.
