Consols Rest- St Ives - Sleeps 4

Although the beautiful landscape of Trowan and the surrounding area shows no evidence of tin mining activity this superb cottage is named after the tin mine which dominated the local area back in the mid 1800’s.

The effort to exploit tin proved highly profitable but short lived and saw the temporary transformation of the farm into a bustling industrial community – the legacy of which now lies hidden deep underneath the green fields and pastures within which Consols Rest nestles.

The cottage has recently been converted from a former agricultural building which had itself enjoyed a previous life as one of a row of tin miner’s cottages hence the name.

Today the solid granite walls reflect the sunlight from early in the morning through to late evening when spectacular sunsets can be enjoyed from the private garden which lies to the west elevation of the cottage.

Both sets of french doors on the first floor open onto their own small balcony to fully reveal the sweeping views of the rolling moorland toward Rosewall Hill and across the adjacent pasture land to the sea beyond.

Inside, the cottage is beautifully converted to reflect the very high standards that are the hall mark of award winning developers Mango Homes who carried out the conversion work in 2006.

Natural slate floors to the ground floor with timber boards and natural stone upstairs contrast beautifully with exposed granite and soft painted plasterwork.

Furnishings and fittings throughout are very high quality, the large open plan living area boasts widescreen LCD TV, Freeview, DVD, Bose soundsystem and wireless internet connection.
The kitchen is hand made with granite surfaces and offers every kind of facility that the modern family require, from the essential corkscrew and bottle opener which are stored alongside a 24 bottle wine chiller, through to peelers and juicers.

A separate utility area provides full washing/drying facilities and storage space for any outdoor gear, it also includes a downstairs wc.

The two bedroom cottage sleeps 4, the master bedroom has a 5ft double bed, its en suite features an impressive vaulted ceiling beneath which lies a walk in Grohe drench shower. The second bedroom features twin 3ft beds and has the use of the main bathroom, where the freestanding rolltop bath perches beneath the exposed granite walls. A second large corner shower and a third WC allows Consols Rest to accommodate both families and couples.

Finishes throughout are both contemporary and warm providing the perfect setting for a relaxing holiday whatever the season. Set at the heart of the former manorial community of Trowan, Consols lies adjacent to the original manor house of this once bustling community.

Today the site comprises a dozen unique cottages that can be found deep in rural countryside yet within just two or three minutes drive or twenty minutes walk across green fields from the centre of St Ives.

About Trowan
Views from the cottages

Trowan Farm is at the centre of what remains of the ancient Manor of Trowan – a small hamlet that predates St Ives by many hundred of years and which in its heyday of the mid eighteen hundreds provided a home for upwards of one hundred people.

By the end of the last century the manor had shrunk to almost nothing – the few remaining cottages having been assimilated into a single farm run from the “Hain House”, the main house on the site which was built by the famous St Ives Shipping firm in 1909 and which still dominates the site today.

Two years ago the entire site was purchased by Mango Homes, a development company that have won numerous awards for the quality of their construction work and they commenced the restoration of the complete site, working in close conjunction with the National Trust who approved the detail of the restoration work.

This work has included the restoration of the old Manor House itself which is now a private dwelling house as well as the restoration and conversion of various outbuildings and ruined former cottages which are now rebuilt in their former glory.

This ambitious programme is now complete and the result is a very private complex of twelve cottages situated in the centre of extensive meadow land on the cliff tops to the West of St Ives.

From the very start of the project the aim was to create a sustainable and attractive setting whilst seeking to preserve ancient skills of stone working and wood working.

The result has exceeded our expectations and the site offers private parking at the entrance (the main site is car free)as well as access to the extensive network of local paths and fields.

In keeping with the mood of the times, all the buildings on the site have very high standards of insulations and glazing, exceeding the national requirement and the complex of a whole benefits from rainwater harvesting and storage and an on site recycling facility – strangely it is always the bottle bank section that fills up quickest!
