The Shack Millook
The shack is set in the middle of a 52 acre site comprising mainly beaches, cliffs and pasture in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Photographs of the strata in the cliffs are used in geological text books, as representing some of the most outstanding examples of chevron folding in the world. When climatic conditions are right, on the beach below great waves form over the rocky reefs creating one of the finest left hand point breaks in Europe. This is the home wave of the current UK and European Surf champions..... Not for beginners.
The shack is probably the most outstanding example of a 20th century seaside beach hut in Cornwall. Built in 1929, it has stood the test of time, weathering the frequent violent storms. Now it has been completely restored in a simple and sympathetic way. Insulated from the elements, it is equipped with a wet room, king sized bed and kitchen area. A basic lifestyle in a spectacular location with uninterrupted views of the Cornish coast. An experience that allows you to be dominated by nature, only a 4 hour drive from Central London.
About Us
Many years ago, we purchased a property, known as the The Former Tea Room at Millook. It comprises of beaches, outstanding cliffs and rock formations, a couple of pastures, the tea room, (now affectionately known as 'The Shack') and a boat shed that we sometimes use as a bunk house for the kids to camp in.
We both worked in the film and advertising industry. I was a photographer and location manager, and my partner, a producer for Roger Woodburn, an Oscar winning director at Park Village Productions. Over the past few years, we have occasionally let the property be used as a location for TV Commercials, Films and Photographic Shoots. We are both very experienced in these operations, and have an intimate knowledge of North Cornwall in terms of locations and contacts. If you are considering a project or campaign and need a consulting service, we may be able to help. See our client list for some of our previous jobs. We are quite flexible and understand things like budgeting and logistics and may be able to help you with your current or future projects.
Interiors and the porch
The interior is very simply dressed. A king size bed, cooker, fridge, sink, and radio! A basic wet room and lavatory. All you need to survive comfortably. Mobile phones do not work very well here. However we can arrange for a landline, broadband and satellite if required?

Information
The location is situated 5 miles south of Bude between Widemouth Bay and Crackington Haven (OS Ref ss 184 001) approx 2 miles from the A39 (Atlantic Highway). It is approached down a very steep and narrow Cornish lane. There is a small parking area adjacent to the entrance of the property. The Shack sits on a grassy knoll 80 metres from the lane. Generally the lane is quiet except when the surf is going off, when it can get quite busy with surfers and spectators jostling for positions to park an array of campervans, pickup trucks and old bangers. They gather to watch and participate in this amazing spectacle. Millook is a natural amphitheatre, A rugged rocky venue where you can watch supreme athletes in their environment. Cool! Be careful the rocks are tricky. Millook is an amazing place, however it is wild and dangerous. Beware. I suppose you've guessed that we are into surfing, more just watching these days unless we are out in Oz or Indo on a nice little break, three feet and clean no wet suits, and 80 degrees in the shade.
However, this is Cornwall, and there are other interesting pursuits in the area.
Back in the second century, B.C. Dioderous, the Sicilian wrote, " The inhabitants of that extremity of Britain, which is called Bolerion both excel in hospitality and also by reason of their intercourse with foreign merchants, they are civilised in their mode of life."
Cornwall is a land of mystery even in Italy, it was common for a story teller to preface his tale with the words "C'era una volta un castello in Cornovaglia"” ("There was once a castle in Cornwall"), and the listeners instantly knew that they were about to be plunged into a the world of ancient myth and legend.
A seaside shack on the coast of North Cornwall
Discover the simplicity of living in an area of outstanding natural beauty, a space to dream. To belong to a place that gives you access to your own private wilderness. A rare experience where contrasts are revered and nature honoured.
A Greek traveller Pytheas said of Cornwall in the fourth century B.C.
"There in the North, where ice, water and air mingle, is without doubt the end of the earth. There I have seen the lung of the sea, for across those vast sandy foreshores and wide desolate creeks the sea moves in and out with a slow breathing rhythm."
Dioderous the Sicilian in the second century B.C. wrote
"The inhabitants of that extremity of Britain, which is called Bolerion both excel in hospitality
and also by reason of their intercourse with foreign merchants, they are civilised in their mode of life."
Surf and the Wave
Surfing waves are formed by climatic conditions and the structure of the sea bed. The rock strata at Millook formed several million years slopes diagonally into the ocean depths. This unchanging barrier forces the wave into a particular shape. Perfect for consistent long waves to be formed. Breaking left to right creating a wave for the best surfers in Britain. A wave that is surfed by our current champions. This is not a wave for beginners... that’s a mile up the coast at Widemouth Bay. A nice easy sandy beach break with friendly life guards. At Millook, you just watch, learn and think "I'll never be able to do that".
