A thousand years ago, there
were perhaps one or two fishing families, living in wattle and daub huts,
wresting a modest living from the sea. Great events of their century passed
them by, as with succeeding centuries, until the establishment of the
great Delabole slate quarry. Port Gaverne soon became a thriving trading
port. Vessels arrived with coal and general merchandise, to be unloaded
by the women and loaded again with slate. If you decided to holiday here in the nineteenth century, you would have found four large fish cellars, a salting house, a copper furnace, a lime kiln and a smithy. From dawn to dusk, there would have been noise and too much activity to allow for a lazy sleep in the sun. |

The arrival of the railway in 1893,
saw the decline of Port Gaverne as a trading port. The old inn frequented
by crews of the slat vessels, was enlarged and became the Port Gaverne
Hotel. Peace and tranquility was once more restored to Port Gaverne. |
