Port Gaverne Hotel
Dining RoomBathroom A thousand years ago, there were perhaps one or two fishing families, living in wattle and daub huts, wresting a modest living from the sea. Great events of their century passed them by, as with succeeding centuries, until the establishment of the great Delabole slate quarry. Port Gaverne soon became a thriving trading port. Vessels arrived with coal and general merchandise, to be unloaded by the women and loaded again with slate.

If you decided to holiday here in the nineteenth century, you would have found four large fish cellars, a salting house, a copper furnace, a lime kiln and a smithy. From dawn to dusk, there would have been noise and too much activity to allow for a lazy sleep in the sun.

The arrival of the railway in 1893, saw the decline of Port Gaverne as a trading port. The old inn frequented by crews of the slat vessels, was enlarged and became the Port Gaverne Hotel. Peace and tranquility was once more restored to Port Gaverne.

You will arrive here, probably in about the same time it took the carts, loaded with slate, to cover the few short miles from Delabole. We can guarantee that the wheels of your carriage will not sink, hub deep into the mud. You will be greeted with courtesy and shown to your comfortable room, with all the facilities of the twenty first century. Our comfortable bar is completely devoid of sawdust and spittoons, but is well stocked with local beers, good wine and spirits. Our restaurant boasts one of the best chefs in Cornwall.

Having been fed and watered, you may spend your days sightseeing at the many local places of interest, riding, walking, playing golf or tennis, or just lazing your days away on the beach amid rocks as old as time. Look out to sea and imagine one of the trading ships coming in on the tide, or close your eyes and hear perhaps the sounds of the old trading port. Let your imagination run away with you.
