Highland Wilderness - tour description
This tour starts by exploring the eastern margin of the great
Moor of Rannoch wilderness area, including beautiful Loch Ossian,
then crosses the Moor to Kingshouse (reputed to be Scotland's
oldest inn; previous visitors have included the Wordsworths).
From Kingshouse we follow the West Highland Way National Trail;
this part of the route traces one of the 'military roads' built
by General Wade in the 18th century as part of the English campaign
to subdue the Highlanders. A night is spent in Kinlochleven, allowing
time, weather permitting, to reach one of the summits of the Mamore
Range. The tour ends at the foot of Britain's highest peak Ben
Nevis (4406 feet) - the summit is accessible to hikers if you
spend an extra night in Fort William.
What previous customers told us about our Highland Wilderness
tour:
‘It’s been a couple of weeks since we got back from Scotland,
but we haven’t been able to quit talking about it. The hike was
a wonderful experience… Until we got to Kings House Inn we didn’t
see another hiker on the trail…then of course we were with hikers
from the West Highland Way…except for the loop trail to Blackwater
dam. We were the only ones on that trail. By the way, we found
that to be an extremely beautiful hike and probably the most enjoyable
of the hikes… In all we were very pleased with your outline, maps,
and comments and explanations…we had a GPS but didn’t really need
it…thank you for your assistance and for helping us enjoy a wonderful
hiking experience.’ C Fine, September 2006.
