The
West Wing of an impressive manor house in a secluded wooded valley... Castle
is situated in south-east Cornwall a mile south of medieval Lostwithiel,
the former county capital town, and just a few miles east of the Eden Project.
The site is reputedly that of King Mark's castle (the defensive stronghold,
Castledore, is 2 miles away) and of his son Tristan's ill-fated love affair
with Isolde. The surrounding area has been described as the most beautiful
and unspoilt part of the county, with many quiet footpaths (the ancient
Saints Way passes by the front gate) and shady byroads. There are many attractive and-even in high season-secluded beaches within a short drive including Pridmouth, near Menabilly (Daphne Du Maurier's Manderley").
The present house at Castle (a former medieval manor) was built about 1810, its mainly classical lines incorporating gothic features. The scale and materials are typical of a Cornish country house with massive granite quoins, pierced balconies and arched multipane windows in dressed granite.
The West Wing at Castle is so designed that it lends itself to being used as a whole unit sleeping up to 12 people plus 2 babies or as 2 individual self-contained apartments, with private entrances from the gardens. The accommodation is furnished so as to create a stylish and comfortable ambience. A lot of attention has been paid to interior decor; there are classically inspired murals as part of the design, central heating, open fires and fitted kitchens and bathrooms. |
