Between the cliffs and the
moors, Carnyorth hamlet is situated about a mile and a half north
of St Just on the St Ives road (B3306), with western views of the
Isles of Scilly and the sea a mile away. Carnyorth is a small rural
hamlet with its own well and resident geese! Left out of the front
door and up the track will bring you through fields onto the moors
- a historic footpath - “The Tinners Way”, stone circle, holed stones,
iron age castle and quoit, Kenython pool, Carn Kenidjack and great
views. Turn right and take the footpath to Botallack and along the
North Coast Path, with spectacular cliff top scenery of the coast
and remnants of tin mining, the Crowns Mine, rocky coves wonderful
for low tide rockpools and walks to Cape Cornwall and Zennor. Portheras
is the nearest beach, 2.5 miles away and the town of St Just has
all amenities. The surfing beaches
of Sennen and Gwenver are a twenty minute drive away. An open-topped
double-decker bus taking you along the famous North Coast road to
St. Ives stops at Carnyorth. There are four pubs and two restaurants
within walking distance.
Nearwell Cottage was built
in 1857 of granite with a scantle slate roof, in a terrace of miners’
cottages. It has been refurbished, and is light and airy. Upstairs
are three bedrooms (one large double bed, one small double, one
single) and a large bath/shower room. The ground floor has a small
front sitting room with inglenook fireplace, TV, video, DVD, library;
a galley kitchen with solid fuel rayburn, washing machine, microwave,
gas cooker, fridge/freezer etc; a dining area and integral conservatory
with an oak floor, open hearth (firewood provided), futon sofa bed
and easy chairs.
Ten granite steps lead from
the conservatory up to the secluded back garden, with seating.
