The Area
|
| Trencrom is located in the striking granite
landscape of Penwith. At this point, Cornwall is just six miles wide,
between the north and south coasts, so opportunities for exploring abound.
The hamlet of Trencrom is made up of miners cottages and a working farm
and is very much set in a living landscape. St Ives, Hayle and Penzance
are all minutes away by car. Surrounded by farmland but just 1.5 miles
from the north coast, the whole area is stunning to explore on foot, by
car or on horseback. A few minutes walk from Ros Marin brings you to the top of National Trust owned Trencrom Hill, an Iron Age fortress hill top, with stunning 360º views to St Michaels Mount on the south coast and Godrevy lighthouse on the north coast. This is a fabulous place to watch the sunset and can link in with circular walks of varying distances. St Ives (3 miles): beautiful harbour, sandy beaches (surfing and sheltered), and cobbled streets. A very wide range of restaurants and pubs, shops, and art galleries, including the Tate. The town has a cinema, craft market, a museum, a theatre, one nightclub and a leisure centre, with indoor swimming pool. Hayle (5 miles): miles of golden beaches and an ideal surfing spot, the renowned Hayle Estuary nature reserve and Paradise Park conservation zoo. Penzance (6 miles): south coast bustling town with plenty of shops and a promenade. Marazion and St Michael’s Mount are 2 miles east along the coast and the pretty fishing village of Mousehole is just 2 miles west. Penzance has connections to the Isles of Scilly with day trips available by sea on the Scillonian III, and by helicopter. The Eden Project is just 1 hr 15 mins drive and Falmouth Maritime Museum is 45 mins drive. Gardens – the National Trust has several gardens and manages a lot of land in the area, plus there are many independent gardens within easy reach, such as Trebah on the Helford River. Horse riding – the Old Mill Riding stables is at the bottom of the hill. Golf – West Cornwall Golf Club is 10 minutes drive from Ros Marin. Walking – where do we start? The whole area is a walker’s paradise with the coastal footpath and the moors of Penwith to explore. Footpaths and quiet lanes criss-cross the whole area and it is wonderful to walk into St Ives (1 hour) for a hearty lunch. Committed walkers could easily spend a whole week at Ros Marin and hardly use the car. Cycling – very hilly but lots to explore for experienced cyclists. Surfing – Cornwall’s north coast has always been a mecca for surfers and Ros Marin offers easy access to many excellent surfing spots such as Porthmeor Beach (St Ives), Gwithian and Sennen Cove. Fistral, Watergate Bay and the other beaches around Newquay are all reached within 1 hours drive. Other watersports such as sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are available on the south coast, and boat trips can be taken from St Ives. Eating out – St Ives in particular has a wonderful array of restaurants and pubs, for all budgets, and many more can be found in Hayle and Penzance. There are also many beachside cafes and country pubs in the area. |
