Land's
End - approximately nine miles west of Penzance, is the
most westerly point of the English mainland. On a clear day,
the Isles of Scilly can be seen lying just on that horizon
- a group of small, yet very beautiful, islands of which five
are inhabited while the remainder of nearly 100 are given
over to sea birds!
The
Land's End Centre is a tourist complex which features the
history and heritage of Cornwall and Land's End, with particular
emphasis on ships and the sea. There are play areas for children,
ships and helicopters to be seen. Meeting at Land's End are
the Northern and Southern sections of Cornish Coastal Footpath,
the centrepiece of the longest continuous footpath in Britain
covering the coast from Poole Harbour and Dorset to Somerset
and the Bristol Channel - over 500 miles in all!
St
Michael's Mount, Marazion
- located 3 miles east of Penzance. Set on an island a few
hundred yards off-shore from the ancient town of Marazion,
the castle - now maintained by the National Trust - has for
centuries been the home of the St Aubyn family. Originally,
the building was a Benedictine Priory which had religious
links with the equally famous Mont St Michel in Normandy,
France. Subsequently, it became a fortified castle which saw
action during the English Civil War and today still has a
battery of cannon.
|
The Island and Castle are open to the public every weekday and
most weekends during the summer. There is an attractive little
harbour with some shops and the Sail Loft Restaurant. At low
tide the island is a short walk across the granite causeway,
at high tide catch a boat across. It can be fun to plan a trip
so you sail over and walk back. |
