Mousehole is located just three miles westward around Mounts
Bay from Penzance and is one of the most beautiful coastal villages in Britain.
Happily, it has remained largely unspoiled by the developments of the 20th Century
and it continues to present the image of the classic Cornish fishing village of
bygone days. The village, whose name is pronounced "Mowzel", is centred around
a nearly circular harbour protected from the force of the sea coming across Mounts
Bay by two sturdy breakwaters. Today there still remain some fishing boats based
in the harbour while these are augmented by pleasure craft to make the vista of
the harbour peaceful and idyllic. It was in Mousehole that lived Dolly Pentreath,
reputedly the last person who spoke the Cornish language as her natural tongue,
which died with her some 200 years ago. |

In winter, the harbour entrance is closed by sturdy wooden
beams to keep the force of the sea at bay and to protect the village. Shortly
before Christmas on "Tom Bawcock's Eve" a monstrous fish pie is baked and consumed
by the patrons of the Inn on the quayside. This event, which becomes a major village
party, attracts visitors from both the surrounding district and from all over
the world. A small and very safe beach is located in a sheltered part of the harbour
which is popular with families, particularly those with small children.
2 Chapel Place is immersed in the
maze of quaint narrow streets and intriguing passageways
that are so much a part of Mousehole's charm, Chapel
Place is no longer typical of the traditional cottages
that cluster in its midst. After a complete re-furbishment
in 2004 it now boasts the light fresh harmony of a contemporary
style interior that is fashionable and comfortable,
yet retains several classic features including stable
doors, panelled ceilings and a period fireplace; all
finely balanced with the modern day luxury of 'a shower
room and two bathrooms' (one has a spa bath), and a
beautifully fitted kitchen with a generous Rangemaster
stove. The simple elegance of windows dressed with pale
wood-slat blinds add a relaxed unfussy charm to the
spacious lounge and upstairs bedrooms attractively dressed
in co-ordinated fabrics each have their own antique
French wardrobe. A rare find in this Cornish fishing
village are a convenient parking for one small car *
just outside the front door and a pretty patio style
garden which catches the sun from late morning onwards;
an ideal spot for an early evening barbecue. If you
feel the need to explore, Lamorna, Porthcurno, Lands
End, Sennen and St Ives are all within easy distance.
*Parking for one small car only (please
ensure the car does not overhang the double yellow lines).
Please note that in Mousehole during the out of season
times (October to May) that double yellow lines regulations
are not enforced unless the vehicle is causing an obstruction.
Please note this property is strictly
non smoking.
