Adventureline International - New England (USA) in the Fall...September 23rd until October 7th, 2006.

From Sept 23rd until Oct 7th 2006, we will be conducting our 3rd walking and sightseeing tour of America's wonderfully forested and mountainous north-eastern states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.

Having family who live in New England has meant that we have made many visits to this beautiful part of America over the last 25 years and we have consequently made many good friends there - some of whom are again helping us run this tour and will also act as additional guides.

This tour is designed around the spectacular autumn colours, which should be at their peak at this time of the year. Many people have always dreamed of witnessing the beautiful New England Fall colour display - and we feel that this is simply the best way to do it!

We will commence in Boston and then travel by mini bus (van) to The White Mountains of New Hampshire - rugged peaks of which 6288 ft Mount Washington is the highest. We shall spend the first week there, staying in a lovely old Inn in the charming town of Littleton, NH.

We will take daily hikes and trails to suit the prevailing weather of the day. This first week will be primarily a mountain experience with easy to moderate - and perhaps one or two serious hikes, to experience the wonderful scenery and wildlife, though with other activities such as boat or canoe trips on lakes and perhaps a journey to the top of Mount Washington by the famous old cog railway.

The walks will be carefully designed so that anyone who is fit and adventurous will have no difficulty doing them, being approx. 6 or so miles per day, with the odd high mountain day being considerably longer. On those days, there is some considerable altitude gain, up to 3000 or 4000 feet. The other days will average up to 1600 feet of altitude gain per day.

As the group will have 2 leaders, it will also be feasible for us to split up some days, so that a more adventurous group could do a higher and tougher hike, such as up one of the bigger Presidential Range mountains. These mountains are quite rough terrain and so we'll be careful to ensure that we do not bite off more than we can handle!

We will eat out each night in some of the best restaurants around!

After the first week, we'll travel on in our van(s) through the forests and mountains of northern NH and Maine to Bar Harbour, in Acadia National Park for 7 nights. This park is famous for it's dramatic granite and glaciated scenery and the whole area is forested and very beautiful. Here, we will stay in a comfortable lodging motel with nice seperate cabins in landscaped grounds, where deer often visit.

Acadia is famous for it's spectacular geology and glacial evidence and we will take daily hikes in the park, up the small but lovely granite mountains and along the beautiful rocky seashore. We could opt to hire bikes and ride the famous carriage trails (car free!) created by a wealthy Rockefeller. We could also hire sea kyaks one day and paddle the quiet fiords...

We'll also probably take a steamer cruise around the inlets and islands and also enjoy a classic Lobster dinner - for which this area is so famous. We will spend 7 nights here, before driving slowly along the spectacular Maine coast, back towards Massachusetts and Boston. On the way, we plan a shopping stop at the famous "L.L. Bean" store in Freeport - where you will be able to see the huge range of outdoor clothing and equipment they sell. This place really is mind boggling - and if you are in need of any outdoor stuff at all, then I should wait until you get there!

If you would like to see some of Boston afterwards, then that is your choice. We can advise on hotels, but the tour ends there. You will be free to organise an extension for any other plans you may have. For example, not far away from Boston is Cape Cod.

The ground costs of this 14 night tour will be $2200, based on two sharing. This equates to approximately £1250 sterling GBP. Singles will incurr a supplement. If the US Dollar continues to be weak against the pound and the euro, this might well be a very affordable trip for European residents! The price however, will not include any Boston accommodations, as we will probably find that some participants will not want to stay there at all, whereas others might require different styles of accommodation for a different number of days. We shall however, be able to make recommendations for an adequate hotel that will suit most people.
Last time, some people commenced the tour in Boston (where we collected them) and others met us in NH or ME. There are many ways to get there, depending where you are coming from!

Judging by advance interest, we anticipate that we will have a good mix of North Americans and Europeans on this tour and it is alsompossible to do both, or one or the other of these weeks.
