OUR ACCOMMODATION IS ALL ON OR VERY CLOSE TO THE SPECTACULAR NORTH COAST.
As usual, you have a choice of
accommodation (to suit all tastes and pockets) and individual descriptions
follow. During 2008, our "fully
inclusive" week long walking holidays (some people come for two weeks)
will range from £450 (B&B) to £700 (luxury hotel) - but are typically
more like £575 for a very good quality hotel.
Whatever your choice, you will find yourself a short walk from splendid
cliffs and beaches and the charming North coast village of St Agnes -
(the fictional village of St Annes which Winston Graham wrote about in the
popular "POLDARK" novels and T.V.series) - and situated some 8
miles west of Cornwall's charming cathedral city of Truro, where the trains
from London arrive.
The National Trust own large
tracts of the local landscape, including the prominent 700 foot high St Agnes
Beacon - with stunning views all over mid Cornwall and up and down the
spectacular north coast.
From here, one can see all the way down the north coast - (past Godrevy
Lighthouse where Virginia Woolf found the inspiration to write "To The
Lighthouse") - to St Ives and beyond, and up the north coast to Trevose
Head and its lighthouse.
All accommodation (apart from Whitehall Farm) is within easy walking distance
of The Railway Inn - a conveniently situated halfway meeting point -
and a very fine traditional Cornish pub - the kind of pub you imagine pubs
should be!
Cleaderscroft
Hotel
A warm and friendly
welcome awaits all visitors to The Cleaderscroft Hotel, which was reopened in
the summer of 1995 following extensive renovations - well received by the
many guests who have been tempted to stop and enter since. Once the family
home of the locally renowned Hancock family, Cleaderscroft was originally
known as "Coulterville", after George Coulter Hancock - one of the
largest landowners in St Agnes during the latter part of the last century.
Indeed, amongst the many properties owned by GCH, was St Agnes Beacon itself!
Coulterville became home to his
eight children and one of his sons, “GCH the second”, started a family law
tradition and became, for a period, the Official Receiver for Cornwall.
The elegant, stone Victorian building stands in the heart of picturesque St
Agnes. It is conveniently situated on the coastal road through the village,
where many varied outlets, hostelries and galleries are a few minutes walk
away, with the beach and cliffs some 10-15 mins walk down the wooded valley
lane.
The accommodation is provided in generous sized rooms (two with four poster
beds) - all with private facilities and colour television. Public rooms
comprise lounge, small bar, two dining rooms and a small games room. On offer
also, is more "family orientated" accommodation - either fully
serviced in the two room family unit, or self catering in the ground floor family
apartment. As the property was originally a Gentleman’s residence, the rooms
which have been decorated in period style have a homely, rather than a hotel
feel - a characteristic which has been maintained during the renovations.
The present owners, Ted and Jeannie Ellis, spent several years living and
working abroad and many of the results of their souvenir hunting can be seen
displayed both in the public rooms and the guest bedrooms.
The generous breakfasts are tailored to suit guest’s individual needs and the
evening meals are always prepared from fresh ingredients calling on recipes
from home and abroad. Frequently on offer is fish of the day which is locally
caught.
The hotel operates a no smoking policy throughout.
If you are a couple, or don’t mind sharing a twin bed room - and you
particularly like private bathrooms and being close to the shops, pubs, and
other facilities and have a sense of humour! - then
this might be your choice.
Lamorna House
Hotel
Lamorna is set in
its own grounds in a beautiful rural location and because of its elevated
position on the slopes of St Agnes Beacon (a 700 foot high hill in an
isolated coastal position), it has stunning views of the surrounding
countryside - moorland, farmlands and a sweeping stretch of the dramatic
North Cornish cliffs and coast - down towards St Ives.
Many footpaths lead to the magnificent cliffs and the lovely sandy cove of
Chapel Porth. Yet despite its tranquil setting, Lamorna is only ten or twelve
minutes walk from the charming village of St Agnes, with its useful shops and
traditional pubs and art galleries.
Lamorna is a small family run hotel, with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There are five letting rooms: 2
doubles, 1 twin and 2 singles. All of the rooms are comfortably furnished and
have hot and cold wash basins and also, tea and coffee making facilities. In
addition, there are 5 toilets, 2 baths and 2 showers - and in practice,
considering the low number of guests involved (max: 8-10), this arrangement
works very well.
The tariff reflects the fact that the rooms are not en-suite and as such,
represents excellent value for money. Moreover, there is no supplementary
charge for single room occupancy.
Great pride is taken in the standard of cooking. Only the best local produce
is used wherever possible, including vegetables from the hotels own kitchen
garden.
A choice is offered at all meals and vegetarians are also carefully catered
for. Judging from the numerous gratifying comments received from their many
guests by the owners Mick and Sandy House - their efforts are certainly
appreciated. The hotel is licensed, so you can enjoy a drink with your meals
whilst admiring the panoramic views from the dining room. After dinner, you
can relax in the comfortable lounge or bar. Alternatively, if you are feeling
more energetic, you can ascend to the top of The Beacon to watch the
sunset over the Atlantic, or perhaps stroll to one of the village pubs.
If you don’t mind not having en-suite facilities and you love wide open views
- and you are trying to save money, then this might be your best choice.
The Beacon Country House Hotel
Very near to Lamorna House, has rooms which all have their own facilities and
although somewhat more expensive, does not charge a single room supplement to
our guests.
The Beacon Hotel is a licensed private hotel and is situated on the southerly
slopes of St Agnes Beacon, just outside the village of St Agnes. It stands in
extensive grounds of 2 acres and enjoys one of the more spectacular vistas in
the area.
The panorama encompasses a wide sweep of countryside, from St Austell and
Bodmin Moors in the east, to the blue waters of the Atlantic, past Godrevy
Lighthouse to St Ives in the west, some 13 miles distant - "as the crow
flies."
The 11 bedrooms are all
tastefully furnished and appointed, all with "en-suite" facilities.
Each room has colour television, direct dial telephones, tea and coffee
making facilities and a standard of comfort commensurate with their AA 2 star
rating.
Both the dining room and lounge take full advantage of the view. Great pride
is taken in the cuisine, which offers the very best of English dishes,
presenting a varied menu making full use of fresh local produce. There is
also an extensive wine selection available with dinner.
The three lounge areas are spacious and offer great comfort, where you may
enjoy a quiet moment or two, or even take your "after dinner"
coffee - and perhaps watch a little television.
For your convenience, the whole hotel has been designated as non-smoking and
has wi-fi access. The well stocked bar is a pleasant place in which to relax
in the evenings.
During the lighter months, it is quite feasible to take a stroll in the
evening up to the top of St Agnes Beacon (10 mins) via the nearby footpath.
From here, really spectacular views of the sunset can be observed. Also, the
village, cliffs and Chapel Porth beach are all about 15-20 mins walk away.
If you would like to be in a nice quiet location, with great panoramas and
very comfortable rooms, then this might be your choice of accommodation.

If you particularly
like the idea of traditional "BED & BREAKFAST" - then there
are one or two very nice Farmhouse B&B's nearby, where you would
however need to go out each evening to a local pub or restaurant for a
meal. However, this option can be considerably cheaper if you only take
small evening meals, or perhaps don't eat so much anyway.

We know that the place you stay in during a walking holiday - and the
welcome and cuisine you receive there - is almost as important as the
walking itself. Consequently, we are very careful to have as our partners,
places that truly complement our local knowledge and guiding services!
